History
The Durban People Mover has been years in the making and was designed from scratch in order to deliver on the multiple benefits planned. The chassis were imported and the bus components were put together locally using South African skills and labour.
The routes were studied carefully and various adjustments were made to ensure the buses could cover the routes regularly and reliably.
Current
There are currently ten buses that service the seventeen stops along two separate routes. The People Mover will engage three different operational phases; Peak, Off-Peak and Night (see maps for routes and times)
The extended hours of 06:30 – 23:00 ensures that commuters can use the buses to explore the city’s nightlife and won’t be stranded when other forms of transport expire.
Future
In the future there are plans to add additional buses to the People Mover route. During the launch phase (June to December 2007) the eThekwini Municipality will carefully monitor the People Mover system in order to assess its effectiveness, iron out problems and initiate any changes that will enhance the operational excellence of the Durban People Mover.
The People Mover service will be an integral part of transporting people for the 2010 world cup, including transporting fans directly to the stadium.
